It is unbelievable to think that we have already finished our first quarter of the 2017-2018 school year! Our faculty and staff have been amazing. At the beginning of the year, we came together to work on a persistent tardy problem. Staff members became active in helping students make it to class on time by being in the halls during the passing period, encouraging students to get to class and welcoming them as they arrived. This resulted in a drastic drop in the number of students receiving tardies. Out of our 1,060 students, 972 have not received a single tardy for this quarter. This requires an immense amount of dedication from those involved, including our amazing students. I wish to thank our teachers and students for making this such a high priority in our school.
We witnessed great success during the first quarter. Our Drama students, under the tutelage of Mrs. Johnson, performed fantastically in their one act plays. Softball, under the coaching of Mrs. Bennett and others, went on to win the district championship for the first time in seven years. The Wahlquist Junior High School football team will be facing South Ogden in the district championship. Volleyball and NAL have just started and show great promise. We anticipate the same success from them. We have great pride in our students and all that they have accomplished.
Recently, we finalized our Trustlands for the 2016-2017 school year. This allowed us to disburse funds in technology upgrades (computer leases, Chromebook labs, calculators, access points and maintenance), textbooks, credit recovery software, and professional development. This funding is crucial for the maintenance of our school. We express gratitude to the early leaders of our state for having the foresight to include this funding in the state program. In the 2017-2018 school year, we will use this funding to purchase new instruments for our band and orchestra programs, four to five new Chromebook labs, teacher buyouts to lower class sizes, as well as providing math labs for struggling students. This funding also helps provide in-service support for teachers.
Once again, we are grateful for this community and their continued support of our school. We accomplish much more when we work together.
